As the 2026 new gTLD application window draws closer, more and more enterprises are asking: should we get our own .brand(dot brand) domain?
The answer isn't just about branding—it’s about control. Owning your own domain means greater digital independence, better protection from cyber threats, increased customer trust, and full ownership of your online ecosystem.
If you're in legal, marketing, IT, or digital leadership, this is the time to act. Here's what you need to know—and how LdotR can support your brand every step of the way.
1. Timeline: Key milestones & deadlines
Applicant Guidebook (AGB) Release
ICANN released the draft Applicant Guidebook on May 30, 2025, and it's open for public comments until July 23, 2025. The final version will be out by December 2025—that’s the version that outlines who can apply, what’s required, and how applications will be evaluated.
If you align early with the AGB, you’ll stay ahead and avoid last-minute setbacks.
Registry Service Provider (RSP) Evaluation
ICANN finished the first phase of RSP pre-evaluation between Nov 2024 and May 2025. The second phase will run alongside the application period in April 2026.
Choosing a pre-approved RSP makes your technical review smoother—and gives you a faster path to launch.
April 2026 Application Window
Applications officially open in April 2026 and will be accepted for around 12–15 weeks, closing by July or August 2026. Missing deadlines or submitting incomplete paperwork can put your whole application at risk.
Post-Application Phase
Once submitted, your application goes through a thorough review—this includes evaluations, objections, contention, and contracting. The process can take up to 24 months, with successful .brand domains expected to go live in late 2027 to early 2028.
2. What does it cost to apply for a gTLD?
Here’s a quick breakdown of the investment:
ICANN evaluation fee: Around $227,000 USD per application
Other costs: Legal consulting, backend technical providers, deposits, and ongoing registry fees
💡 Smart brands budget for the full journey—from application prep through to long-term operations.
3. What you’ll need to apply
To successfully secure a .brand, your organization needs to meet a few key requirements:
A. Legal & governance
Own an active trademark (ideally registered with the Trademark Clearinghouse)
Set up an authorized legal entity to apply
Have a plan in place to respond to any objections or challenges
B. Technical competency
Partner with an ICANN-approved RSP
Meet all DNS and registry technical standards
C. Financial & operational readiness
Secure funding for multi-year gTLD operations
Get cross-functional alignment across legal, IT, marketing, and leadership
D. Business justification
Be clear on your “why”: Whether it’s for brand trust, brand protection, global positioning, or digital security, make sure you have a strong internal case
4. Recent updates & new opportunities
Draft AGB released: May 30, 2025
Public comment period open: Until July 23, 2025
